About Us
The Society of County Treasurers comprises all county council chief
financial officers and the chief financial officers from Herefordshire, East
Riding of Yorkshire and the Isle of Wight Council. The Society of County
Treasurers is primarily a forum to discuss issues surrounding:
 |
Financial management; |
 |
Personnel; and |
 |
Matters affecting local
government generally, and English County Councils in particular.
|
The Society works closely with other organisations on a number of local government workstreams. Examples include:
 |
Co-ordinate local authorities'
expenditure submissions on behalf of the Local Government Association (LGA); |
 |
Provide financial advice
for the County Councils Network (CCN); and |
 |
Hold membership of the CLG-led
Settlement Working Group (SWG), which reviews the distribution of revenue grants to English local authorities.
|
Additionally, membership frequently submit views on local
government issues to Government Departments, Commissions, Select Committees
and other bodies.
The Society prepares and circulates a wide variety of financial information
to members. However, some of this material is more widely available. For
example, in conjunction with the Society of Municipal Treasurers (SMT), the Society produces an annual publication that contains a description of the methodology and the data used to calculate each authority's Local Government Finance Settlement. Copies of the latest edition can be ordered via the Publications page.
The main Society membership consists of the Treasurers of the thirty-four
'upper tier' English County Councils, plus the Treasurers of three Unitary
Shire Councils (Isle of Wight, East Riding of Yorkshire and Herefordshire).
These members may also act as Treasurers of other bodies such as police
authorities or combined fire authorities. Former County Treasurers also remain
honorary members of the Society.
Society members are annually elected to officer positions to conduct the affairs of the Society of County Treasurers. For details of the individuals currently elected please click on the positions below.
